Marek’s Disease in Poultry: A Silent Threat to Your Flock

Marek’s Disease is a highly contagious viral disease of chickens caused by a herpesvirus. It primarily affects young birds, leading to tumors, paralysis, and significant economic losses in poultry farms if not properly controlled.

The virus spreads through feather dust, dander, and contaminated environments. Once introduced into a poultry house, it can persist for long periods, making it difficult to eliminate completely.

Common signs of Marek’s Disease include:

  • Paralysis of legs or wings (birds unable to stand)
  • Twisting of the neck or abnormal posture
  • Weight loss despite normal feeding
  • Vision problems or blindness
  • Irregular pupil size
  • Reduced growth and productivity

In many cases, affected birds gradually become weak and die. The disease also suppresses the immune system, making birds more vulnerable to other infections.

There is no cure for Marek’s Disease, but it is largely preventable through vaccination. Chicks are typically vaccinated at the hatchery, which provides protection as they grow. Good farm hygiene, proper litter management, and strong biosecurity practices also help reduce the spread.

Early vaccination and proper management are essential to protecting your flock and maintaining a productive poultry operation.
